Strengthening Circular Economy in Basketball, FEGABA’s Local Actions in Spain

Within the framework of the REBOUND project, the Spanish partner FEGABA (Galician Basketball Federation) has been actively promoting sustainability and circular economy principles in sport through a series of targeted local actions and institutional engagements.

As part of these efforts, FEGABA held a high-level meeting with the Provincial Council of Pontevedra, exploring future collaborations that aim to further support and develop basketball in the region. During the meeting, the REBOUND project was presented as a key initiative under Erasmus+ Sport, highlighting the role of sustainability and sport as powerful drivers of social transformation.

In parallel, FEGABA strengthened its institutional outreach through a meeting between its Erasmus+ Sport coordinator, José Cobelo, and the Deputy Director General for Waste and Circular Economy of the Xunta de Galicia, Isabel González. The discussion focused on introducing the REBOUND project and its core vision of integrating circular economy practices into the world of basketball. This exchange marked an important step towards building strategic partnerships and opening new pathways for the implementation and impact of the project.

Further advancing its dissemination activities, FEGABA also engaged with the Galician School of Referees, where the REBOUND manual, developed in collaboration with European partners, was presented to students. The session provided an opportunity to explore how sport can transition towards a more sustainable model, while encouraging dialogue and knowledge exchange.

During the presentation, particular emphasis was placed on the five key pillars of the REBOUND project:

  • Education and Awareness
  • Waste Prevention and Reuse
  • Sustainable Sport Activities
  • Sustainable Equipment Management
  • Digital Transformation

These initiatives demonstrate FEGABA’s strong commitment to embedding sustainability within basketball structures, from institutional cooperation to education and capacity building.

Through continuous collaboration and knowledge sharing, REBOUND is paving the way for a more sustainable future in sport, where even small steps can lead to meaningful and lasting change for basketball and beyond.
