On May 24, 2025, the REBOUND project was presented at the ICPESS 2025 International Congress on Physical Education and Sport Science, during the round table discussion: “Sustainable Sports, Tourism & Active Mobility: The Three Pillars of Green Cities”, held in Komotini, Greece.
The project was represented by Vasilis Ntakouris, President of Evnikos Basketball Club and Board Member of the Hellenic Basketball Federation (EOK), who delivered a presentation titled: “Circular Economy and Sustainable Development in Sports: The Example of Basketball Clubs (REBOUND Project)”
His presentation explored how basketball clubs can contribute to sustainable development by adopting circular economy strategies, such as:
- Reuse and recycling of sports equipment and clothing
- Eco-conscious event management
- Reduction of single-use plastics
- Use of digital tools to minimize waste
- Promotion of sustainability among athletes, staff, and the local community
Mr. Ntakouris also shared practical examples and good practices implemented across Greece, Spain, and Italy, demonstrating how circular thinking can be effectively applied in the sports context.
The presentation also highlighted the commitment of the Hellenic Basketball Federation to advancing sustainability in sports through its comprehensive Social and Environmental Responsibility Strategy “EOK Plus+”.
This participation, at ICPESS, provided a unique opportunity to present REBOUND’s objectives, methodology, and impact to an audience of academics, sport professionals, and sustainability experts. It reinforced the project’s mission to bridge the gap between grassroots action, education, and EU policy for greener and more inclusive sports.
REBOUND will continue to promote sustainable change in sports by:
- Delivering training and educational materials.
- Developing tools to support the transition to circular models.
- Raising awareness and engaging stakeholders across Europe
The future of sports is circular — and REBOUND is helping shape it.
